Firmware TCP/IP Upgrade Overview using FTP

This document simply provides an overview of the TCP/IP procedure for upgrading the firmware versions of all the Microplex products (with flash PROMs) requiring use of the FTP protocol.

General Overview
Microplex products which utilize flash PROMs can be upgraded across a TCP/IP network through a simple download procedure from a host running FTP (File Transfer Protocol).

Having to get new EEPROM chips containing the latest firmware is not required for upgrading.

Process Overview
  1. Every TCP/IP upgrade procedure using FTP starts with downloading the following required upgrade files from Microplex and placing them onto your host server;
    • Firmware binary file.
  2. All upgrade files are in compressed format so therefore they must first be uncompressed to be made ready for use.
  3. Once the upgrade files are uncompressed on your host server, the product is put into upgrade mode.
  4. Once the product is in upgrade mode the following is what happens next;
    • The upgrade process is started by using the ftp "put" command to place the firmware binary file directly onto the product.
    • The new firmware code is written to flash memory (taking approximately fifteen minutes) and the unit is then automatically reset.
  5. Some firmware upgrades may also require a new set of support files to be installed to the product. This would happen after the firmware upgrade is complete and would also be accomplished via FTP.
  6. Finally, a "list sysinfo" command on the product should now show the new firmware version.
